The Massachusetts Maple Leafs are
off to a fast start in league play boasting an 11-0 record.
Coupled with the Leafs traditionally strong non-league schedule, the
program finds itself
ranked 7th in the nation out of 66 teams according to MYHockey Team
Rankings. The ranking system,
which combines relative strength of schedule with game results to create
an overall rating,
finds the Leafs as the highest ranked team from the Continental Hockey
Association.
Overall, the Leafs find themselves with a 20-10-2 record against other
Junior B, Tier III A,
Tier II A, and Canadian Teams. The non-league schedule, although tough,
has enabled the Leafs
to prepare for their league competition.
In addition to the undefeated start in the Continental Hockey Association,
the Leafs have
finished 2nd in the Mercyhurst College Showcase, going 3-1-1 in the
tournament. Their only loss
came to the Ajax Knights (Canada Junior B) 5-3. Other results from
the tournament include
6-4 and 4-2 wins over the Toronto East Enders, a 13-5 win over Hampton
Roads, and a 3-3 tie with Atlanta.
Eric Stelnick played well on the weekend collecting 14 points.
Leading the way offensively for the Leafs has been California native Stelnick,
who in 32 games
has collected 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points. Stelnick also finds himself
ranked 7th in
league scoring with 27 points despite having played substantially less games
than those above him.
Philadelphia, PA native Riley Hess, ranked 6th in league scoring with 30 points,
has 21 goals, 31 assists,
and 52 points to his credit. 1992 birth Karl Poss is among the league leaders
in scoring also and
has 42 points in 32 overall games to his credit.
The Leafs early season success comes at the hands of several promotions within
the hockey program.
Ben Brouillard, C.J. Cordeiro, and D.J. Cavicchi, from the Leafs high school
development team, have added
additional scoring punch. Brouillard and Cordeiro, Somerset, MA natives and
high school teammates,
have amassed 18 and 16 points respectively as linemates. Cavicchi has added
five goals and five assists
for 10 points in a limited six games with the Junior B Squad.
In addition to the scoring punch the Leafs have shown thus far, more impressively,
has been
the stingy defense which has a whole has only allowed an average of 1.91 goals
against in league play.
Leading the way has been the combination of goaltending duo Caleb Holder and
Matt Cray. Holder,
a ’91 St. Louis, MO native, is 4-0 in league play with a 1.50 GAA and
a .938 save percentage.
Cray, a veteran from last year’s CHA Junior B Championship team and National
Tournament participant,
is 5-0 in league play with a 1.90 GAA and a .922 save percentage. The duo is
currently ranked 2nd and 4th
among goaltenders in the league.
Eben Crandall, Robert Berg, and Jason Alera have led the way on the defensive
side of the puck.
Bret Zimmerman, Kyle Gasior, Brendan Ganem, and Ben Stachowiak have followed
suit to aid the Leafs
in having one of the top defenses statistically in the CHA.
On tap for the Leafs are three important league contests starting with a matchup
against
the New Hampshire Monarchs on Friday, November 6th, and then traveling to Staten
Island to take on
the Metro Moose for a two game set. The pair of games against the Moose will
feature the leagues
top four rated goaltenders and the two best defenses.
